Calm seas never made good sailors: 1st of October 7:00pm, 2015

Dedicated to all of those, who are willing to overcome various difficulties that come their way.  Like Richard Wagner did, having survived a real storm on the way to London from Riga, which inspired him to write “The Flying Dutchman”. And like Sergey Rachmaninov, who, deeply depressed and unable to compose, sought help with neurologist/psychiatrist Nicolai Dahl and as a result went on to write, among others, Concerto No. 2 and later “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini”  – one of the most outstanding and romantic musical pieces in the history of classical music.

Pianists Alexei Gryniuk, Kasparas Uinskas together with musicians of Liepaja Symphony Amber sound Orchestra under the direction of Atvars Lakstigala will take you on this stormy, yet beautiful and therefore inspiring musical journey.

Can quantity have good quality? Is family and work a match? Is suffering a companion of a meaningful and substantial art?

Domenico Scarlatti composed 555 sonatas, was father-of-9, lived 72 years.

Frédéric Chopin wrote 244 pieces, never married, lived in poor health for mere 39 years.

Franz Liszt – composed of 59 pieces, father-of-3, 2 of which he lost, yet himself counted 75 years of life.

How many centimeters shorter is the chair of the charizmatic pianist Evgeni Bozhanov and how does it reflect in his performance of jeweler-like precision? – is up to the attentive listeners to work out!

The middle sister has a say: 4th of October 6:00pm, 2015

Cello – the middle sister among string instruments: not as low-pitched and as large as the double-bass, not as high-pitched and small as the violin. It is believed to be the closest sounding instrument to the human voice. Embraced by one´s limbs it transmits warmth and tenderness, yet is able to sound like scolding or an advice you better take.

Charged with intimacy the evening´s program includes “Frenzied Nights”, “None But the Lonely Heart” and some other romances by Tchaikovsky and two sonatas, one by Johannes Brahms and one by Sergei Rachmaninov, where cello, mastered by Radutiu and piano – by Bozhanov, play an equal part.

Violin, only violin: 6th of October 7:00pm, 2015

Almost two centuries separate Johann Sebastian Bach with Eugène Ysaÿe, Fritz Kreisler and Béla Bartók. What is the difference between their compositions and how do these differences reflect the epochs, during which this music was composed? Which pieces can the 21st-century-listener identify him/herself the best with: 17/18th century (Baroque) – clear rhythm, with mathematical precision organized harmony or 19/20th century (with no additional name), which denies almost all compositional rules and looks for something new?

The guide through this historical soundscape is violin, only violin, in the hands of the talented Nikita Boriso-Glebsky.

The most expensive sounding?: 8th of October 7:00pm, 2015

Pizza, Pasta, Prada, Gucci, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Verdi and Puccini. And Stradivari. Italian creativity, refinement and craftsmanship seem to have no limits.

Antonio Stradivari – Italian crafter of more than 1000 string instruments, 650 of which have survived, 500 of them being violins, which in the international auctions are sold for millions (the most expensive Stradivari to date is worth 16 million dollars).

Stradivari Quartet must have done something in order to be provided with these exceptional instruments by the Swiss “Habisreutinger” Foundation. This will be demonstrated by the members of the quartet in the “most expensive sounding” concert.
